"Thanks Phil for the info on the SkyStream and pole height. The wind turbine, as well as many other components for installation, has already been donated. The primary purpose of this project will be education rather than energy recovery. We are…"

It's a beauty. I think the best thing the SkyStream 3.7 has is the distinctive curved blades. It is a beautiful design. The one I installed in 2007 has produced more renewable energy than any other residential installation on the entire HEA grid for 2009. It is on a 70' tower on a 30' hill beside a home in Nikiski. My 1kw produces a sweet whirring sound that I associate with free energy. I'm upgrading to a 3kw next year!

Above is a picture of Bear Creek Wineries 60ft Monopole Skystream tower. This 60ft Monopole skystream 3.7 is a 2.4kW system, I believe they are coming out with a larger system around 3.5kW, but it is in beta testing at the moment. Southwest Windpower did just come out with a new 70ft mechanical lift monopole as of April 2010 and does not require a crane for install or maintenance. For educational purposes this turbine is sufficient, but does have its limitations in production.

Phil, we apologize for not getting back with you to included some of our installed turbines to your tour. We do have many units up and would love to have some included next year. Because a lot of people have asked us about sound, production, and the differences in the units, we have started a Wind Turbine Tour for the community that started last May and is on going. The link is www.akwindindustries.com/wtt if anyone would like to take this tour here is a map as well with directions, or you can take the virtual tour by calling the number and pressing the extensions. But definitely talk to the owners and find out how these units produce even compared to the different styles. We did just install the Endurance 5.5kW 90ft hydraulic monopole tower down east end road in Homer and will be adding this to our tour shortly.

We hope that Kodiak HS has a great experience with the installation and studying the unit. We know the kids are our future and hope they are inspired to create the next and best renewable energy systems!!

Jennifer,
You asked for a photo of a 60' monopole for Kodiak HS. I have found the 60' monopole gives poor results. The Alaska Solar Tour has turned down 2 similar installations as the owners were not getting the output they were promised.

The SkyStream 3.5 is a $5,500 wind turbine. You should spend at least that much on the pole. I like to install 100' poles and 70' is the minimum if around trees or buildings.
