David, I would contact the manufacturer and ask them for a copy of their Independent Third Party Certification report. If they don't have one or are reluctant to share it, I would move on to a different supplier.

You can also contact Jim Norman at ABS Alaska in Faribanks to see if it's one of the turbines he has evaluated. He has a test site set up in the Healy area.

Also, visit these guys in the Texas Panhandle.  http://www.windenergy.org/

I am looking for instantaneous power production info for small scale turbines under 10kw. I was reading in industry litrature such as HomePower that manufactures prefered to provide annual production info for an average wind speed.

Are there any resources for verified production studies for small scale turbines ?

Manufactures information would be welcomed as well.

I would like to test a proven turbine,

in a more perfect world there might be power production specifications to use in the turbine selection process to achieve a better turbine selection. I wonder if any of the tools are able to do this perhaps it is something that homer could do since it has a database for turbines.

(Pre-Commissioned turbine - hence the large accumulation of ice; we dont see this kind of build-up while in operation, but shows how big big of a punch it can throw. Dec 08)

Some of the fun stuff we are now able to tackle in terms of keeping the tip brakes working optimally. The solutions we are currently working on and joint problem solving with Kotz:
- Eliminating the spring mechanism for a retractable cable. (Currently under testing at both Kotz and Banner) Initial promise but more data is needed.
- Using inorganic and organic coatings on aluminum surfaces. Theoretically recuding ice adhesion up to 90% (we will see). Coatings motly deveoped by NASA for shurttle re-entry. Blade tepholon basd coatings are showing inclredible results in Nome.
- Replacing constant force spring with linear force spring; thus adding more holding strength while in operation and not comprimizing braking process/streses.
- Using dual purpose electro magnets; both creating magnetic field and thermal heat. Hope is to boost connectivity issues between electromagnet and holding plate in certain enviormental conditions like ice and frost by breaking ice adhesion bonds in certain conditions

Wind Turbine Maintenance: Bottom Line for Regional Success

Hope to post some nuts and bolts comments soon involving Ice, Corrosion, and Communications but figured I'd start my comments with a fluffy mission statement.

As having the first (as I know) full time wind technician in Nome Maintenance has always been a part of our future/present development. To assist our full time person we need a network of part-time technicians to execute specific tasks when needed. Up unit this point we have spend an above average amount of time with the system at Banner Ridge and will continue to do so until we begin to modify existing issues.

With the reduction of maintenance time and energy spent with Banner coupled with the expanding mature local workforce we are now looking at providing expanded services within the region. Our scope can involve one time immediate work, or up to full Asset Management.

We believe it will begin to capture efficiencies in O&M costs, primarily leveraging the proximity of a knowledgeable workforce and economies of scale. Ultimately leading to lower cost, higher reliability wind energy with strict responsibilities to ensure we do everything within reason to keep the blades turning.
