DESCRIPTION:Northern communities face serious challenges, including cl
 imate change, accelerated resource development, and a dramatic increas
 e in energy prices. The Sustainable Northern Shelter project links env
 ironmental and cultural sustainability as an essential aspect of the g
 reen building movement. In addition to highlighting the important cult
 ural aspects of the design, through the use of community design charre
 ttes, the presentation also explores technical considerations includin
 g materials and transportation, building envelope design, heating and 
 ventilation, energy modeling and monitoring, and community workforce t
 raining. By fostering a sense of inclusiveness in the design process t
 hese projects are resulting in solutions that are healthy, affordable,
  sustainable, and a natural fit for the people who call them home. Jac
